Blacks in Government (or BIG as it is often referred to) is a National Organization that was established in 1975 and incorporated in 1976 as a non-profit organization. It is an employee advocacy and professional development association made up of civil servant members throughout all levels of government and private industry. BIG is committed to improving public service through promoting EQUITY in all aspects of American life, EXCELLENCE in public service, and OPPORTUNITY in the workplace for all Americans.
The San Antonio Chapter of Blacks In Government was organized in 1979 by the late Honorable Hazel Calhoun Hayes of San Antonio, and received its charter during the summer of 1980. The Chapter is part of Region VI which has Chapters in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, and the National Association of Blacks in Government with chapters in nearly every state.
SAC BIG is a registered 501 (c) 3 - nonprofit seeking to engage and advocate on behalf of city, county, state, federal and military Government workers. The broad organizational goals and objectives include advocating for diversity, developing and promoting programs, which will enhance ethnic pride, provide educational opportunities, and provide a non-partisan platform on major issues of local, regional, and national significance. One of our annual grant/scholarships bears the name of Mr. Raymond Beebe and Mr. William Hays, who were ardent and legendary supporters of Chapter activities.
SAC BIG sponsors various activities annually to include an Oratorical competition, a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) competition, and our culminating event has been our annual Scholarship Banquet/Gala. In addition, we host a membership drive during Fiesta at the Taste of New Orleans and we actively participate in the annual Juneteenth Celebration at Camanche Park helping to serve hundreds of meals as well as introduce our outstanding scholarship award students. to the community.
